NY TIMES: "The North Carolina amendment declares that “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” A group of family law professors across the state called the language vague and untested, and warned that, in addition to applying to all variations of same-sex unions, it could also apply to the more than 150,000 straight couples in the state who live together but are unmarried. This could invalidate domestic-violence protections, undercut child custody arrangements and jeopardize hospital visiting rights, they said."

Governor Martin O'Malley Signs Bill Allowing Same-Sex Couples To Wed In Maryland

Maryland’s governor has signed a measure legalizing gay marriage, joining seven other states and the District of Columbia. As the Associated Press is reporting, Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, signed the bill Thursday, a week after its final passage in the Legislature. The law is scheduled to take effect in January 2013.

"I saw with so many of the gay couples, they were so devoted to another. I saw so much love. When this hearing was over, I was a changed person in regard to this issue. I felt that I understood what same sex couples were looking for."
- A chance shake-up of Maryland House of Delegates seating assignments brought Republican Wade Kach face to face with gay couples who had come to make the case for a gay marriage law, and might have proved decisive in its final passage through the state’s General Assembly on Thursday. Kach, who had previously backed attempts to define marriage as between one man and one woman, found a space right next to the witness table. (via latimes)

Washington’s Governor Signs Gay Marriage Into Law

Washington’s Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a gay marriage bill into law at a ceremony Monday, meaning same-sex couples will likely be able to get married there beginning June 7. “We’re here to make history,” she said at a signing event. Washington will now be the seventh state to have legalized gay marriage.
