But the biggest surprise of “Aschenputtel” [Grimm brothers version of the Cinderella story] is that it’s not about landing the prince. It is about the girl herself: her strength, her perseverance, her cleverness. It is a story, really, about her evolution from child to woman.

It is Cinderella herself who plants the magic tree and requests the finery for the ball (which is celebrated over the course of three days). She walks to the party each night rather than traveling by enchanted coach. She leaves not because she has some arbitrarily imposed curfew but because she has danced enough. Then she escapes both the pursuing prince and her own father by hiding in a dovecote or nimbly scaling a tree.

When the prince finally comes a-calling, shoe in hand, Cinderella greets him in her sooty rags. He may be looking for the beauty with the dainty foot, but, as Joan Gould, the author of Spinning Straw into Gold, notes, she demands that he witness the woman she has been, dirt and all, not just the one she will become. So while he provides the occasion for her transformation, he is not the one responsible for it— she can only do that for herself.

Oh my gosh people, be nice to your waiter/waitress, it’s not their fault that your food is cold or if it’s under cooked. Be nice to the cashiers who are still training and can’t ring up your items as quickly as you want. If a stranger smiles and says hello to you, smile and say hello back! It’s just common courtesy, I don’t understand why people have to be so rude.

The social psychology graduate program at UCSC has a unique mission and focus. We use Kurt Lewin’s model of “full-cycle” (theory-application-action) social psychology to study a broad range of topics related to social justice. Our students learn to apply psychological theories and data to the analysis and solution of a wide range of social problems. Knowledge gained in action-oriented research leads, in turn, to the development of new theory. We examine justice-related issues in different cultural, political, and policy contexts, through a variety of research methods. Our students are trained in laboratory, field, and survey methods; they are encouraged to attend to issues of race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, and physical ableness, and are steeped in critical theoretical perspectives such as feminist theory. Our graduates go on to successful careers in academia as well as in community, government, and non-profit settings. Our approach to research and training, combined with the quality and competencies of our faculty, make our program among the nation’s best for the psychological study of social justice issues.

a few weeks ago I discovered UC Santa Cruz’s graduate program for social psychology and, without exaggerating at all, it sounds like everything I want but didn’t know existed in a real program. I’m still excited about this discovery even though it’s been a while since I first saw it. since the beginning of the year I’ve been going through a reassessment of what I want to do as an adult and while my actual anticipated path hasn’t changed very much, a lot of the details have been filled in. I feel so determined and it’s awesome.

Senator withdraws gay-inclusive amendment to immigration reform:

Sen. Patrick Leahy this week withdrew his proposed amendment to the immigration reform bill that would have recognized marriages between same-sex couples.

Several Democrats and Republicans had said earlier they would not support the measure for various reasons, but especially because they did not want one specific amendment to block the passage of immigration reform altogether.

Sen. Chuck Schumer went last, saying, “This is one of the most excruciating decisions I have had to make in my [time] in Congress. … Not to do this is rank discrimination.”

He then said, however, of opponents of inclusion, “They’ve made it perfectly clear that if this provision is included … they will abandon [the bill.] … If we make the effort to add it to this bill, they will walk away. … The result, no equality, no immigration bill, everyone loses. … Much as it pains me, I cannot support this amendment if it will bring down the bill.’

“I will be here,” Schumer said to the LGBT community, to work on the issue in the future. “This is far from our last battle together.”

Sen. Al Franken, likewise, joined in the decision not to support the amendment, saying, “This is the definition of a Hobson’s choice. … It’s wrong to discriminate against people, but I do not want the LGBT people who would be hurt by this bill not passing, this whole bill not passing, to be hurt by this falling apart.”

Well, this is a gigantic bummer. Reform that deliberately excludes LGBT people is not very progressive at all.

When the American Psychological Association commented on this research, they said, ‘This gross under-representation of women or girls in films with family-friendly content reflects a missed opportunity to present a broad spectrum of girls and women in roles that are non-sexualised.’”
